I study institutions, both formal and informal. I am particularly drawn to the less conventional ones, such as religion and law, and how they interact with the mainstream institutions around them. My methods follow the question, from case studies to formal models to econometrics and machine learning. My current work focuses on China's judicial system.

My path into research began in the LSE Department of Philosophy. Its motto has stayed with me ever since: rerum cognoscere causas, to know the causes of things. When I am not chasing the causes of things, you will likely find me rereading Harry Potter, of which I am an unapologetic and lifelong fan.
